Arezzo: Piazza Grande

Piazza Grande is the most beautiful square in Arezzo, in the heart of the medieval city: its characteristic trapezoidal shape, arose around 1200 and was later modified and reduced in size in the XVI century, with the creation of the Vasari loggia. Many buildings are noteworthy, such as the Palace of the Logge, built in 1573 by Giorgio Vasari and The Faggiolana Tower, of the XIII century. Piazza Grande is the spectacular setting of the Giostra del Saracino, a knightly tournament that usually takes place every year, between June and September.

Arezzo: the Cathedral

Arezzo’s Cathedral is the most important place of worship of Arezzo; it guards works by Piero della Francesca and Andrea della Robbia. Inside you can admire the seven stained glass windows, masterpiece of Marcillat cycle, and the fresco of Mary Magdalene painted by Piero della Francesca in the sixties of XV century. The monumental altar houses Giorgio Vasari’s wooden choir, made in 1554.

Arezzo: Vasari’s house

“A house built in Arezzo, with a suitable site to establish beautiful gardens, in San Vito area, where the air is the best of the town”.

With these words Giorgio Vasari described his house, bought in 1541, today seat of Vasari’s museum. The house of Giorgio Vasari is on three floors: the basement, the elegant apartment on the first floor and another one on the second. All around the house, there’s a garden with a centrally geometric structure. Since 1911, on the occasion of the fourth centenary of the birth of the Artist, the house is owned by the Italian State.
